Ever Wonder What Your Baby is Thinking? Or Why Your Baby is
Crying? Using the BABY SIGNS® Program gives babies a way to
“talk” with their parents before they can talk. Babies can
communicate about the world around them long before they have
mastered their verbal speaking skills! Babies and their
parents can use simple signs to communicate important things –
like being hungry or thirsty, hot or cold, afraid or sad – often
a full year before babies could otherwise speak.

Viroqua Wild West Days
Vernon County Fairgrounds

Friday, August 15 - Sunday, August 17
http://www.wildwestdays.info
Winner Of The 1999 Governor's Award For Best Downtown
Event
Wild West Days, held the 3rd weekend of August, is the
time of the year that Viroqua folks and visitors from
afar commemorate and celebrate the era when Western
Wisconsin was the Wild West.
The undertaker goes to work in the aftermath of a staged
shootout.
Located east of the Vernon County Fairgrounds, the 7
acre grounds are transformed into an 1880s Boom Town
complete with Tent City vendors. You will find
merchants, restaurants, gambling, the Northstar Hotel
with a barber, the Buckeye Saloon, the Marshall's
Office, a general store, and even an undertaker! A
fur-traders rendezvous and Civil War camp complete the
scene. A game street provides challenges to the keen of
eye and strong of arm in games of skill and chance that
hark back to times when games weren't electronic.
A young cowboy tries his luck at marbles in the gaming
area.
There's a dance hall with dance hall girls, too, and
free music playing all day in the saloon. The wildly
popular Hog Wrestling event draws over thirty teams of
"pretty young men and brave strong women" from all over
the area competing to see who can stuff a muddy pig in a
barrel the quickest.
A crowd watches the annual "Hog Wrestling" competition.
The saloon and streets of the boomtown will erupt as
lawmen and outlaws decide who rules the frontier town of
Viroqua. There is "reenaction action" by the 1st
Wisconsin Company D, the only Civil War Reenactment Co.
in Wisconsin that is reactivated by the National Guard.
A staged brawl between cowboys and soldiers.
As the sun begins to set Saturday afternoon, the
cowboy's fun is just beginning as Wild West Days kicks
off the Hell On Hooves Ranch Rodeo and Bull Riding
Bonanza. The Ranch Rodeo tests the skills of the cowboy
in every aspect of daily ranch work. Bull riding, rope
doctor, sorting, wild cow milking, and mutton bustin'
for the kids provides challenges a-plenty for the teams
and for the crowd. Hell On Hooves promises to put the
excitement back into rodeo Saturday night at 6 p.m. and
again Sunday at 2 p.m. when the American Cowboy competes
for the buckle and the bucks!

It's relationships, not programs, that change children. A great
program simply creates the environment for healthy relationships
to form between adults and children. Young people thrive when
adults care about them on a one-to-one level, and when they also
have a sense of belonging to a caring community.

gardens with your butterfly passport and earn a free cone
from Michael's Frozen Custard!
First, the butterfly exploration begins in
the Lobby of Olbrich Botanical Gardens where people can investigate the
mysterious exotic butterflies in Dan Capps' collection on display and
back by popular demand. Capps has traveled around the world to build the
most impressive traveling display of exotic insects in North America.
Next, discover rare tropical treasures hidden in the heart of Madison!
Experience the wonder of strolling through a tropical rain forest on a
search for fleeting butterflies. Live butterflies are emerging from
chrysalises daily in the Bolz Conservatory. The Bolz Conservatory, which
will house the live butterflies, is a two-story glass pyramid filled
with exotic plants from around the world, a rushing waterfall, fragrant
orchids, and free-flying birds, and for one month out of the year,
thousands of colorful butterflies. The dainty painted lady, the
exquisite swallowtail, the tropical zebra butterflies, and many others
will all float through the lush greenery feeding on the nectar of bright
flowers. Up to two dozen species of butterflies, native to both
Wisconsin and tropical areas of the southern United States, can be seen
at various times during the exhibit.
Families can collect stamps in their passport without leaving the
gardens - their Butterfly Passport, that is. This fun tour will take
families on a search through the outdoor gardens to find butterflies in
their natural habitat, and earn a free frozen cone from Michael's Frozen
Custard. Visitors can look for Wisconsin's native butterflies and take
home ideas about how to attract butterflies to their own backyard
gardens. Along the way, children can visit stamping stations to collect
stamps in their Butterfly Passport while learning fun facts. The
passport is the ticket to an exciting adventure during which kids will
make fascinating butterfly discoveries.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for
children ages 3-12, and free to ages 2 and under. Members of the Olbrich
Botanical Society are admitted free of charge.
Two hatcheries will be featured in the Conservatory for many
opportunities to see butterflies emerging into life.

$15, (5 & under) FREE
http://www.airventure.org/2008/events/kidventure.html
This is not close or cheap, but it's
quite an adventure. This is the largest
airshow in the world! What makes it great
for kids is their KidVenture area with
tons and tons of stuff for kids. They have
pedal powered airplane cars, hands on remote
controlled airplane lessons, build your own
gliders, interactive booths, and more. The
main AirVenture area includes tours of many
different airplanes.
If you go, bring a wagon or
oversized stroller (the off-road type).
Fill it with plenty of drinks, snacks, sun
block, and some airplane related toys/trinkets
from the dollar store. They have food
on-site and a gift shop, but expect to pay a
premium. Expect to do some major walking--
much of it through fields. Don't expect to
see any air conditioning along the way-- so if
it's really hot, be prepared! Some of the
airshow airplanes are loud-- really, really
loud! So bring ear protection for anyone
with sensory issues. Oh, and one last
challenge... the highway system is not designed
to handle the type of traffic that will be there
with you, so expect a small traffic jam on your
way in and out. Gee, I sure hope this
paragraph hasn't talked you out of going,
because it really is a fun event despite the
challenges for families.

Experience Butterflies in Living Flight in the
Bolz Conservatory at Olbrich Botanical Gardens
-
Investigate
exotic butterflies!
-
Experience the
thrill of butterflies in flight!
-
Explore the
gardens with your butterfly passport and
earn a free cone from Michael's Frozen
Custard!
First, the butterfly exploration begins in the
Lobby of Olbrich Botanical Gardens where people
can investigate the mysterious exotic
butterflies in Dan Capps' collection on display
and back by popular demand. Capps has traveled
around the world to build the most impressive
traveling display of exotic insects in North
America.
Next, discover rare tropical treasures hidden in
the heart of Madison! Experience the wonder of
strolling through a tropical rain forest on a
search for fleeting butterflies. Live
butterflies are emerging from chrysalises daily
in the Bolz Conservatory. The Bolz Conservatory,
which will house the live butterflies, is a
two-story glass pyramid filled with exotic
plants from around the world, a rushing
waterfall, fragrant orchids, and free-flying
birds, and for one month out of the year,
thousands of colorful butterflies. The dainty
painted lady, the exquisite swallowtail, the
tropical zebra butterflies, and many others will
all float through the lush greenery feeding on
the nectar of bright flowers. Up to two dozen
species of butterflies, native to both Wisconsin
and tropical areas of the southern United
States, can be seen at various times during the
exhibit.
Families can collect stamps in their passport
without leaving the gardens - their Butterfly
Passport, that is. This fun tour will take
families on a search through the outdoor gardens
to find butterflies in their natural habitat,
and earn a free frozen cone from Michael's
Frozen Custard. Visitors can look for
Wisconsin's native butterflies and take home
ideas about how to attract butterflies to their
own backyard gardens. Along the way, children
can visit stamping stations to collect stamps in
their Butterfly Passport while learning fun
facts. The passport is the ticket to an exciting
adventure during which kids will make
fascinating butterfly discoveries.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is
$5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12, and
free to ages 2 and under. Members of the Olbrich

Ever Wonder What Your Baby is Thinking? Or Why Your Baby is Crying?
Using the BABY SIGNS® Program gives babies a way to “talk” with
their parents before they can talk. Babies can communicate about the
world around them long before they have mastered their verbal
speaking skills! Babies and their parents can use simple signs
to communicate important things – like being hungry or thirsty, hot
or cold, afraid or sad – often a full year before babies could
otherwise speak.
