March 21 - March 28
I'm late again! I've
got to stop procrastinating! At any rate, here's the scoop
for the week.
The weather--
If you haven't been outside lately, things have changed!
As I write this, the 99th inch of snow for this season has
fallen. We have a bit more snow predicted for Easter
Sunday morning so we should hit the 100 inch mark for the first
time since the glaciers left! Look for highs all week in
the upper 30s to upper 40s with snow chances on Sunday, Tuesday,
and Thursday.
Easter Egg Hunts...
You may want to check on these before you go as the
weather may make finding those eggs a bit of a challenge...

We went last year and had
a blast! We
saw day old lambs, learned about sheep shearing, watched an
almost-born chick try to work it's way out of the eggshell, saw
rabbits and much more. It's very hands-on. The sheep
are so friendly and docile. I had no idea it would be so
much fun.
One of the ladies at the farm ran a
demonstration on the "felting" process, where you take
the fluffy wool, and turn it into a sheet of fabric felt. My
7 year old, who is autistic, was completely obsessed by the
process and insisted on watching (and helping) in the process.
One other thing to note is that the
prices for everything were reasonable-- admission, beverages,
vendors-- the works! The value of interaction with the kids
outweighed the cost many times over.
If you go, take your camera-- I got
some of the best
pictures ever! Last year they sold soda, water, and hot
chocolate-- so bring a snack for the kids. Once you get
inside the barn it's dry and cool, but it is a farm, so there will
be some mud outside the barn.

Crying? Using the BABY SIGNS® Program gives babies a way to
“talk” with their parents before they can talk. Babies can
communicate about the world around them long before they have
mastered their verbal speaking skills! Babies and their
parents can use simple signs to communicate important things –
like being hungry or thirsty, hot or cold, afraid or sad – often
a full year before babies could otherwise speak..

Fitchburg Library Story Time... Hmmm...
I didn't know Fitchburg had a library... Well, they don't...
however... for
the last 2 1/2 years, parent volunteers from the Fitchburg area,
with the support of the Friends of the Fitchburg Library, have
been offering a free story time at the Fitchburg Community
Center on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. They do this weekly
during the school year, and then offer a six-week summer session
the McKee Farms Park Shelter. Their fall session is about to
start up again at the Fitchburg Community Center on Thursday,
Sept. 6th. Each week children 5 and under and their caregivers
hear stories, sing songs with fingerplays and create a craft.
Their goal is to build a community of readers by getting
children hooked on books and demonstrating one way that a
library in our city would be a benefit to the community.

"It is amazing! It is for toddlers!! They sit on
little animals and little cars and watch a movie while
they get there hair cut."
"They only cater to kids - they have a separate
salon for adults, Dianne Jon Salon. They put in a movie,
the kids sit on a animal that has a seat belt on it. If
the child needs a shampoo they have a sink that they lay
down for. They have a room in the back that they can sit
on mom's lap if they are too scared to sit on the
animal. They are fairly reasonable priced in my opinion
- around $16 (you pay $13/$14 at cost cutters, etc.)"
"I have gone to Next Generation on University by
Hilldale Mall. It was $15-$20 depending on the
experience of the person cutting. They did a nice job,
had a video for my son to watch, and had cute carnival
type chairs to sit on."
"A
great place - we absolutely love Shianne! The have fun
stuff to sit on (mini cars, an elephant, and another
creature that I can't recall) and will run kid movies or
let kids look at books during the cut. Also, when my
kids were really little, they let me keep them on my lap
during the cut."

"About the hair salon.
It depends on the kid. I've been very happy at Escape Du
Monde in Fitchburg, which used to cater to kids and
doesn't really anymore, but it is very soothing and more
of a salon, so it is very calming if she has a "calm"
child. I was very disappointed in Next generation,
which is supposed to cater to kids because I found it to
be cramped and dirty, but if you had a really active kid
it might work fine."

"On the near east side of Madison - the barber shop on
Atwood Avenue, run by Bev - she's a mom of older kids
and LOVES kids. She's great!! Near the intersection of
Division and Dunning. A haircut is $12 or $14...I can't
remember."

"The stylist that does my daughters hair does a fabulous job.
I'm always amazed at how she cuts the hair of a 'moving target'
like she does. I've been going to her for many years and my
daughter started when her hair was long enough to cut - around
age 2 - she is almost 6 now."
