Kids for Peace Parade, Noon - 1 p.m.
http://www.madisonchildrensmuseum.org
Peace Be With You: Considering the world's state of affairs, it
wouldn't hurt to make everyday Kids for Peace Day. Perhaps
that's why the Madison Children's Museum is stretching its
signature event into a month-long celebration, beginning Sept.
8, with a series of related exhibits and weekend programs. This
year's Kids for Peace Day, slated for Sept. 22, will mark the
tenth anniversary of locally acknowledging the United Nations'
International Day of Peace (officially observed on Sept. 21).
Highlights include performances by the Suzuki Strings of Madison
and traditional Native-American dancer Art Shegonee, followed by
a noon parade around the Capitol Square featuring the Atimevu
Drum & Dance Company, Mama Digdown's Brass Junction, the
Brazilian-style percussion collective Handphibians and klezmer
band Yid Vicious. In 2004, museum officials began making civic
involvement a larger component of Kids for Peace Day, according
to education manager Kia Karlen, who says pre-addressed
postcards will be available for children and their parents to
send messages to state legislators. But the museum draws the
line when it comes to discussing war and other current events
with kids. "Our philosophy is that parents are the first and
foremost educators of their children, and we do not try to
interject ourselves too directly in that process," Karlen says.
Museum admission on Kids for Peace Day is free. Visit
madisonchildrensmuseum.org or call 256-6445 for more details.

Fitchburg Library Story Time... Hmmm...
I didn't know Fitchburg had a library... Well, they don't...
however... for
the last 2 1/2 years, parent volunteers from the Fitchburg area,
with the support of the Friends of the Fitchburg Library, have
been offering a free story time at the Fitchburg Community
Center on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. They do this weekly
during the school year, and then offer a six-week summer session
the McKee Farms Park Shelter. Their fall session is about to
start up again at the Fitchburg Community Center on Thursday,
Sept. 6th. Each week children 5 and under and their caregivers
hear stories, sing songs with fingerplays and create a craft.
Their goal is to build a community of readers by getting
children hooked on books and demonstrating one way that a
library in our city would be a benefit to the community.

Dragon Knights at Madison World Music Festival
UW Union
Terrace
Saturday, September 15 - 5:00pm and 7:00pm
but also see them wandering the Union Theater
and Memorial Union throughout the World Music
Festival.
http://www.union.wisc.edu/worldmusic/
Dragon Knights lends the fest a chimerical
touch. Lili Valerie Noden, the troupe’s founder
and artistic director, calls her spectacularly
artistic feats of engineering, ridden and
operated by puppeteers on stilts, “culturally
blended theater.” Noden, who’s French,
uses pole stilts that originated in Africa,
China and France. “Hundreds of years ago,” she
says, “shepherds used them to guide their sheep
over floodwaters and marsh grasses. People
discovered them and used them in folk dances.”
The eerily graceful pole stilts – unlike the
sturdier, more common dry wall stilts – were
unknown in the States till recently, notes
Noden. “I think I was the first to make and sell
them here, though now a lot of people buy them.”
Look at the pics on the Dragon Knights website,
www.stiltshow.com. You’ll wonder about them
too.
