The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County is in need of Backpacks and School Supplies

The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County is asking for your help to get the word out. On August 25th the Club will hold the Annual Back to School Extravaganza in Penn Park from noon-2pm.

The Club is in need of donations of Back Packs and School Supplies. This year our goal is to give out 1,500 back packs to some of our areas neediest kids. Each year the Club has a waiting list of children needing supplies so we are doing are best to make this year's event a success.

"Too many of our area children are starting off to school without the supplies they need. The first day of school should be exciting," says Marcia Hendrickson, the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County chief professional officer. But for many area kids the first day of school is met with embarrassment or sadness as they look around and see other kids with new crayons, calculators, notebooks, folders and pencils.

Donations can be dropped off at either of our Club Locations:

2001 Taft Street, Madison ... or
4619 Jenewein Rd., Fitchburg

A recent Wisconsin State Journal story found the average cost of back-to-school supplies for an elementary-level student is $57.49. Feel free to sponsor a student with a cash donation of this or any amount. Please make checks payable to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County and send to our Taft Street location and indicate it is for the Back to School Extravaganza.

Fitchburg Library Story Time
Fitchburg Community Center
Thursday mornings at 10:00 am starting September 6

Fitchburg Library Story Time... Hmmm...  I didn't know Fitchburg had a library... Well, they don't. For the last 2 1/2 years, parent volunteers from the Fitchburg area, with the support of the Friends of the Fitchburg Library, have been offering a free story time at the Fitchburg Community Center on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. They do this weekly during the school year, and then offer a six-week summer session the McKee Farms Park Shelter. Their fall session is about to start up again at the Fitchburg Community Center on Thursday, Sept. 6th. Each week children 5 and under and their caregivers hear stories, sing songs with fingerplays and create a craft. Their goal is to build a community of readers by getting children hooked on books and demonstrating one way that a library in our city would be a benefit to the community.

The 2007 summer concerts in the park open on June 14 with concert number 700, a milestone for a band whose founder thought it would die when he did. Concerts continue every Thursday throughout the summer at 7:00 p.m. at Madison's beautiful Rennebohm Park, 115 N. Eau Claire Avenue. There's plenty of street parking and easy access for drop-off at the shelter. All are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a friend for listening comfort. Arrive early, stay late. Don't miss a beat. Concerts last one hour and you leave wanting more. In fact, the audience cheer after the final number is often "play one more." With some cajoling, there's always an encore favorite.

Fans can get a sneak preview of the 11th-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team on Saturday as the Badgers host their annual Family Fun Fest and compete in an intrasquad scrimmage in the UW Field House. Admission to all events is free.

The Family Fun Fest begins at 5 p.m. with interactive games and events. Kids can play volleyball with the UW players, get temporary motion W tattoos, test their vertical jump, play in a jump castle, receive free balloon sculptures and get their photo taken with Bucky Badger.

“Family Fun Fest is a great way for our fans to get up close and personal with our players and our staff,” said UW Coach Pete Waite. “Kids can do a variety of things on and off the court with the Badger players and really get to know them. It's a great way to kick off our season and show our fans how much we appreciate them.”

At 6:30 p.m., there will be a question and answer session with Coach Pete Waite. The evening will wrap up with a Cardinal vs. White scrimmage at 7 p.m.

"Fans will get a chance to see some of the new things we've added to our offense along with seeing our freshmen for the first time,” said Waite. “Al Wack and Kim Kuzma are adjusting well and learning quickly. This scrimmage will give our fans a glimpse of some of the exciting matches they'll be watching this season.”

Gates B and C of the UW Field House will be open on Saturday. Parking is free in lots 17, 18 or 19.

Zor Shrine's Fun Fest
http://www.zorshriners.com
Editors note:
This sounds like it has potential to be a really fun, whacky time.  Keep your eyes out for Shriners running all around town bringing fun into our lives!

Shriners from five states and Canada will come to Madison August 15-18 for a week-end of parades, music concerts, and competitive events, all open to the public.  Local host, Zor Shrine, is expecting 1,500 Shriners from l2 chapters in Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to assemble for the summer session of the Midwest Shrine Association. The Shrine organizations, noted for their philanthropic support of Shrine Hospitals for Children, are also widely recognized as a fun-loving fraternal group willing to share with the public their talents as musicians, singers, clowns and variety entertainers.

Their first parade is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, August 16, around the Capitol Square.

Friday, the 17th, will feature an all-day vintage car display at the Zor Shrine Center at 575 Zor Shrine Place.

The public is also invited on Friday to attend several unusual competitive events running from 9-11:30 a.m., including Shrine clowns at West Towne Mall and choral competition among Chanters at the Madison Masonic Center, 301 Wisconsin Avenue.

At the same time, contests among horse patrols, drum corps, fife and drum groups, and motorized units, will be held in the Alliant Energy Center parking lot.

Zor Shriner and Midwest Association General Director John Thorstad, Madison, also announced that a Shrine massed-bands concert will be held Friday noon at the King Street corner of the Capitol Square along with a steel band exhibition at the State Street corner.

In the evening the Shriners will be entertained at the Overture Center with a "Shrine-a-Rama" featuring the Kids from Wisconsin.

The Midwest Shrine session concludes on Saturday, August 18, with an 11 a.m. parade along North Sherman Avenue from the Aberg intersection to the Madison Mallards stadium.

The popular Art Cart van hits the streets of Madison and surrounding communities again this summer for ten weeks of outdoor teacher-led art adventures. Two programs, Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA!, offer free art-making experiences to kids and their families.

Continuing a tradition of more than 30 years, the Art Cart program brings portable art projects and a join-in-the-fun spirit to Madison parks, playgrounds, community centers, and beaches on weekdays. This year's schedule consists of more than 90 stops throughout the city, including evening programs at half of the locations. Art Cart is organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) and Madison School & Community Recreation.

Art Cart runs June 21 through August 23. Activity hours are from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm (morning sessions); 1:30 to 4:30 pm (afternoon sessions); and 5:30 to 8 pm (evening sessions), weather permitting. Art Cart EXTRA! begins Saturday, June 23 and runs through July 28. Activity hours for Art Cart EXTRA! are 10:00 am to noon and 2 to 4 pm (except for a July 7 session at Lake Mills, which will run from 2:30 to 4:30 pm).

Advance registration for individuals is not required; groups of eight or more are asked to call the museum at 608.257.0158 at least two days in advance to ensure adequate supplies. Participants should "dress for a mess" in comfortable play clothes.

A schedule and map for both programs may be downloaded at www.mmoca.org.
