Duck Soup Cinema
Capitol Theater, Overture Center 201 State St.
Saturday, February 24, 2:00pm and 7:00pm Cost: $4 Call: 258-4141
http://www.overturecenter.com/ducksoup.htm

While it's not free, it is pretty darn cheap!

Duck Soup Cinema is Overture's silent film series. These light-hearted presentations bring back the Capitol Theater's early years as a silent-film era movie palace. We present a classic silent movie accompanied by live music played on the Grand Barton Organ, and preceded by vaudeville style entertainment on stage, magic in the lobby, and a chance to win fabulous door prizes, hosted by funnyman Joe Thompson and the lovely and talented Anna Hahm. All shows take place in the newly remodeled Capitol Theater. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. All seats reserved.

One of the silent era's most spectacular action blockbusters, The Black Pirate boasts an early Technicolor process, making it one of the only color silent films. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. stars as a nobleman who is the sole survivor of a ship seized by pirates who blow up the ship, killing everyone on board, including Fairbanks' father. Fairbanks vows revenge and subsequently joins the pirate crew, walking a fine line by seeming to aid the pirates while actually protecting potential victims and plotting the pirates' downfall. Fairbanks's astonishing acrobatics remain dazzling today, and the climactic battle includes some great underwater footage. This film includes Fairbanks' most famous and widely copied stunt, riding down a sail on the edge of a knife.

Vaudeville Entertainment: Ace Willie, strolling magician; MadHatters, a cappella singers; T.R. Loon, juggler

Drop-ins welcome!! KIDS HAVE OFF SCHOOL
http://www.kevasports.com/day_with_dad.html

Dad and Kids can play: Hockey, Football, Basketball, Soccer, Yard games and Tumbling.

Launched in 2002, Day with Dad was started with a simple goal in mind, “Give dads a day with their kids.” On the last Friday in February, Madison and the surrounding school districts give students a day off, and Keva opens the doors to let the kids, and their dads in the door for a day of fun. It sounds simple enough, but Days with Dad can be hard to come by as work, family demands and after school and weekend activities place demands on what little free time already exists. Day with Dad is a free event, in which over 650 dads and kids participated last year. With organized activities, open courts, arts and crafts as well as entertainment it’s a great day for both kids and dads alike.

Never has there been a time when an understanding of science has been more important to the well-being of individuals and to the nation than the present. Yet many recent studies have documented a lack of interest in science and hence a decline in science literacy in the United States.

To address this problem, UW-Madison in 1984 began a program called The Wonders of Physics aimed at generating interest in physics among people of all ages and backgrounds. The heart of the program is a fast-paced presentation of physics demonstrations carefully chosen to be entertaining as well as educational.

The show has been presented by Professor Clint Sprott on the Madison campus over 170 times to a total audience of about 60,000. In addition a traveling show has been developed and presented by physics graduate students and staff over a thousand times to audiences of all ages throughout Wisconsin and the nation. A variety of educational tools and materials have been developed including videos, software, a demo book and a lecture kit.

The legendary, ageless stories of Hans Christian Andersen come vividly to life in StageWorks Projects upcoming production of Tales of Hans Christian Andersen at the historic Stoughton Opera House on February 17.

The production will include four of Andersen’s most beloved tales. The Emperors’ New Clothes tells a tale of vanity and shows that just because everyone else says something is so, doesn’t mean it is. The Little Mermaid tells us that getting what you want sometimes involves great sacrifice. The Ugly Duckling reveals that someone who is different from everybody else often has inner qualities that transcend those differences. Finally, The Swineherd tells what can be lost when someone can’t see the beauty in everyday things.

Tales of Hans Christian Andersen is the first foray into non-musical children’s theater by StageWorks Projects, recently designated as the resident theater company of the Stoughton Opera House.

Tales of Hans Christian Anderson tickets are $7.00 General Admission. They can be purchased at the Stoughton Center for the Performing Arts at 515 East Main St. in Stoughton, Monday through Thursday from 4:00PM to 9:00PM or call the StageWorks Projects office anytime at (608) 873-0717.
