Shakespeare Players' "King Lear"
1806 West Lawn Ave. 258-0015 [MAP]
- FREE
August 15 - August 27 - Performances at 6 p.m. Two matinees on
8/26 at 11 am and 8/27 at 1 pm
http://www.ysp.org
King Lear has been called "the Everest of Shakespeare's
achievement." The play is two parallel stories: the old
king who gave his kingdom away to his cruel elder daughters and
the Earl of Gloucester who trusted his villainous younger son.
It is a play that questions the very heart of who and what
humanity is and what our connection is to the heavens, to the
natural world, and to one another. The memorable characters
include selfless heroes, hideous villains, and a Fool who
teaches his king.
Capital Brewery
7734 Terrace Avenue, Middleton
Friday, August 18th The Swing Crew 6:00pm-9:00pm
http://www.capital-brewery.com/events/music.html
Don't forget to pack your
picnic, picnic blanket, toys (think large plastic cars), bug
spray, and camera. If you haven't been, there are always at
least 30 kids running around and the whole place is fenced in
(except for a small passageway just to the right of the stage--
keep your eye on it). It is one of the easiest family venues
for live music.
This week's entertainment is the Swing Crew. We have
seen their act at Capital Brewery the past three years and they are
great fun! The first half of their act is very clean and
family oriented. The second half of their act gets a bit
more risqué. They hand out maracas made out of recycled
water bottles filled with popcorn kernels and bumper
stickers. A couple years ago I even got to play the washboard on
stage for a song. Check it out at http://www.whatacoolfamily.com/photos/2004_09_capbrew_web/index.htm.

Will Gary Grasshopper spit?
If not, it's six more weeks of summer. If he spits by 10 a.m. on
August 12, autumn starts on September 23. February has Jimmy the
Groundhog, now August has Gary Grasshopper (no "the" for
Gary.)
Indie Coffee at 1225 Regent Street
in Madison is creating a new national holiday called Grasshopper
Day, celebrated on the second Saturday in August. This year, that
falls on August 12.
The full schedule of events is on
the Indie Coffee website, at http://indiecoffee.net
but highlights for August 12 include:
10:00 a.m. Will Gary spit?
10:05 a.m. Kids Rock and Read.
Grasshopper Lady Terri Gregory reads children's stories about
grasshoppers while local voice performer db Pederson creates
nature effects, including grasshopper chirps.
10:45 Katherine Kirk, co-author
(with Charles Bomar) of The Guide to Grasshoppers of Wisconsin
(published by Wisconsin's DNR in 2005) will read from the book and
sign a copy for the first 20 people at the reading.
11:30 Grasshopper Races. Cheer Gary
on, as he races his grasshopper buddies, Dennis Hopper and Juicy
Lucy in the patio behind the coffee shop. Kids can enter their own
grasshoppers, if they bring them in a safe, secure container.
7 p.m. Earl Foss's Brown Derby, a
country-western band from Madison will play a suitable collection
of hoppy songs. Sip your grasshopper drink and enjoy!
Young

Returning this year is the Sunset Celebration. Created along the
lines of Mallory Square, Key West's historic waterfront, the
Sunset Celebration will be held each Saturday night an hour
before sundown during the summer starting June 10 and ending
August 12. Once the Hoofer Sailing Club steam whistle indicates
an hour before each Saturday sunset, invited street performers
will exhibit their skills until the sun goes down. Weather
permitting of course; in case of inclement conditions, the music
will move indoors into the Rathskeller and the Sunset
Celebration canceled. As dusk approaches, a designated
"Sunset Celebrity" will officially announce the
sunset.
